Jazz Bar in Seoul: Live Music and Dinner at Flatnine Gangnam

If you are looking for a live jazz bar in Seoul where you can enjoy dinner and music in the same place, Flatnine in Gangnam offers something different from a typical restaurant or bar.

After spending two years traveling around Southeast Asia, I returned to Seoul and began meeting friends I had not seen for a long time. On this evening, I met a friend I had known for ten years and wanted to choose somewhere more memorable than our usual restaurant or cafe.

Music has always been an important part of my life. In my thirties, I regularly went salsa dancing in Gangnam and sometimes visited simply to listen to Latin music. While traveling alone in Bali, I also spent many evenings at live music bars in Ubud.

That is why Flatnine caught my attention. It combines a multi-course dinner with a live jazz performance in an intimate room near Gangnam and Sinnonhyeon stations.

Course menus, prices, musicians and performance times may change. Check Flatnine’s current schedule and booking information before visiting.

sychoi’s Tip: Check the monthly lineup before booking and choose a performance that matches your taste. I arrived one hour before the 8:00 p.m. show, which gave us enough time to settle in, begin the course and hear part of the rehearsal. Rehearsals are not guaranteed, and the best arrival time may vary by performance.

    Getting to Flatnine

Flatnine is located between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station. I approached it from Gangnam Station, and the location was convenient for meeting someone coming from another part of Seoul.

The entrance is at street level, while the jazz bar itself is on the fifth floor. Look for the standing Flatnine sign beside the building entrance.

I made a reservation through Catchtable for 7:00 p.m., one hour before the scheduled performance. A monthly concert calendar near the entrance listed the musicians appearing on different dates.

When I arrived, the band was rehearsing. Hearing part of the sound check before dinner made the early arrival feel worthwhile, although this may not happen before every performance.

A Dark and Intimate Jazz Bar

Flatnine felt more like a small performance venue than a conventional Gangnam restaurant.

The interior was dark, with small lamps illuminating the tables. A grand piano, double bass and drum kit filled the stage area, while portraits of musicians covered the wall behind it.

Tables at Flatnine face the stage for a clear view of the live performance.

Many of the two-person tables were arranged so that both diners could face the stage. Instead of sitting directly opposite each other throughout dinner, we sat side by side and watched the musicians.

Most of the guests I saw were couples. The low lighting, close view of the stage and shared course menu made the space feel suitable for a date or anniversary.

It would also work for friends who enjoy live music. I visited with someone I had known for ten years, but meeting in this setting made the evening feel different from our usual conversations over coffee.

    The Separate Performance Fee

The performance fee was KRW 15,000 per person at the time of my visit and was charged separately from the food.

This additional cost may give some visitors pause, especially when combined with the price of a course menu. However, the performance did not feel like background music added to an ordinary restaurant.

The musicians performed directly in front of the audience, and the stage was close enough to see their expressions and movements. The experience felt closer to attending a small concert while having dinner.

If your main goal is an inexpensive meal or a quiet conversation, Flatnine may not be the best choice. It makes more sense for an evening when the live performance is part of the reason you are going.

    Our Classic Course for Two

My friend and I ordered the Classic Course for two, priced at KRW 78,000 during our visit.

The dishes were served one at a time on shared plates. We had seen different food in older reviews, so the course appears to change depending on the season or available ingredients.

We both chose a non-alcoholic welcome drink. Having a non-alcoholic option meant we could enjoy the atmosphere of a late-evening jazz bar without ordering wine or cocktails.

The slower pace of the course worked well with the setting. We could eat, talk and wait for the performance without feeling that we needed to finish quickly.

    Melon Salad and Bread

One of the first dishes was a Korean melon salad served with bread.

A light Korean melon salad and bread began our dinner course at Flatnine.

I had eaten Korean melon many times as fresh fruit, but this was my first time trying it in a salad. Its mild sweetness and crisp texture made it a refreshing beginning to the meal.

The bread had a crisp exterior and a moist interior. Together, the salad and bread provided a light introduction before the richer courses arrived.

Because each dish was served gradually, the meal never felt rushed. It gave us time to talk and pay attention to the atmosphere around the stage.

    Soft and Balanced Lasagna

I do not usually seek out lasagna, so I was not expecting it to become one of my favorite dishes of the evening.

Lasagna served as part of the Flatnine dinner course
The warm lasagna was soft, savory and one of the highlights of the course.

The layers were soft, and the seasoning was well balanced. The tomato sauce and creamy topping added richness without making the dish feel excessively heavy.

I had initially thought of Flatnine primarily as a music venue. The lasagna made me realize that the food was not simply an accompaniment to the performance.

    Tender Main Course

The main course included meat served with vegetables and sauce.

The meat course was tender and served with vegetables and a savory sauce.

The meat was surprisingly tender and easy to cut. It also had a gentle smoky flavor that worked well with the sauce.

Of all the savory dishes, this was one of the most satisfying. The portion was not large like a steakhouse serving, but it suited the rhythm of a multi-course dinner.

All the dishes for two were served on shared plates. Travelers who prefer individual portions should keep this in mind when booking.

    Was the Course Filling Enough?

Small portions are a common concern with course menus.

At Flatnine, each plate arrived slowly, which allowed us to talk between courses and enjoy the music. Combined with the performance, the evening felt complete rather than focused only on the amount of food.

Still, very hungry diners may find the shared portions lighter than a full restaurant meal. I would recommend Flatnine for its combination of food, atmosphere and music rather than for large portions.

It is best to think of Flatnine as a complete evening experience instead of only a dinner reservation. The course, performance fee and drinks can add up, but you can spend the evening in one place rather than moving between a restaurant, cafe and music venue.

Dessert Before the End of the Evening

The course ended with a chocolate dessert.

The sweet finish was a pleasant contrast to the savory lasagna and meat course. By this point, the performance had become the main focus of the room.

Eating dessert while listening to live jazz made the final part of dinner feel more memorable than simply ending with coffee at another location.

Live Jazz by the Park Him-chan Trio

The Park Him-chan Trio began performing at 8:00 p.m. during my visit.

The piano, double bass and drums filled the relatively small room with enough energy to hold everyone’s attention. Because our table was close to the stage, I could clearly see how the musicians responded to one another.

We watched the first 50-minute performance before leaving for another appointment. The time passed quickly, and simply watching the musicians concentrate on their work helped me forget the stress of the day.

Flatnine schedules different artists, groups and music styles throughout the month. My experience reflects the Park Him-chan Trio performance rather than every evening at the venue.

    Who Would Enjoy Flatnine?

Flatnine may be a good fit for:

    • Couples planning a date or anniversary in Gangnam
    • Visitors looking for live jazz in Seoul
    • Friends who want something beyond dinner and coffee
    • Travelers who prefer an intimate venue to a large concert hall
    • People who want food and music in the same location
    • Non-drinkers who still want an evening-bar atmosphere

It may be less suitable if you want:

    • An inexpensive dinner
    • Large food portions
    • A completely quiet place for conversation
    • A casual bar where you can arrive without checking a schedule
    • Live music without a separate performance charge

Is Flatnine a Good Live Jazz Bar in Seoul?

Flatnine is worth considering if the performance is as important to you as the meal.

The separate performance fee increases the total cost, but the musicians are not simply providing background music. The seating, lighting and stage create the feeling of a small concert venue.

I enjoyed the gradual pace of the course, especially the melon salad, lasagna and tender main dish. More importantly, the live performance changed an ordinary meeting with an old friend into a memorable evening.

If you are searching for a jazz bar in Seoul for a Gangnam date night, check the lineup first and choose a performance that matches your taste.

Try a Korean Minhwa Painting Class in Seoul

For another arts-focused experience in Seoul, consider a Korean folk painting class.

Minhwa (민화) refers to Korean folk painting known for colorful subjects and symbolic imagery. In this beginner-friendly class, participants learn about the history and meanings behind minhwa before creating their own artwork.

The class is held near Seongsu and Konkuk University. Materials are provided, and participants paint on traditional Korean paper mounted on a small wooden panel. The completed artwork can be wrapped and taken home as a handmade souvenir.

The activity is separate from my Flatnine visit. I have not personally participated in this class, so check the current language, meeting location, duration, package details and cancellation policy before booking.
