Chimney Mansion: A Bakery Cafe in Hongdae, Seoul

Looking for a cafe in Hongdae that serves something a little different? At Chimney Mansion, I tried chimney cakes with a decaf Americano served in a small metal pot. The bread was warm, the upstairs room was quiet during my weekday visit, and I ended up enjoying a slower morning than I had planned.

I usually spend my mornings creating content and save cafe visits for the afternoon, when my concentration starts to fade. That day, however, I felt like getting out of the house. I headed to Hongdae for a late breakfast at a bakery cafe I had been meaning to visit.

A Distinctive Bakery Cafe in Hongdae

Chimney Mansion’s brick walls and dark upper facade stand out along the street.

The building caught my attention before I even stepped inside. Its brick walls, large windows and dark upper facade reminded me of a European house. I could almost imagine it appearing in a scene from The Sound of Music.

There were ice cream options advertised near the entrance, but I had come for the chimney cakes. With a late breakfast in mind, I wanted to try both a savory option and the cafe’s signature bread.

Upstairs Seating and a Quiet Weekday Morning

White fabric covers the walls and ceiling of the upstairs seating area.

The cafe has seating on two floors, with outdoor tables as well. During my weekday morning visit, it was quiet enough to look around and take photographs without feeling rushed.

Upstairs, white fabric draped across the walls and ceiling gave the room an unusual appearance. Warm lighting and terracotta-colored floor tiles added to the atmosphere, while the large windows brought in daylight.

I chose a window seat. It was a comfortable place to sit alone, watch the street and enjoy breakfast without immediately opening my laptop.

The cafe also had different seating arrangements for people visiting together. I could see it working for a casual date or a catch-up with friends, although my experience was specifically of a quiet weekday morning.

sychoi’s Tip: I arrived around 11:10 a.m. on a weekday and had time to photograph the interior before eating. That was my experience on this visit, rather than a guarantee that the cafe is always quiet.

    What Is a Chimney Cake?

Assorted chimney cakes on display at Chimney Mansion in Hongdae
The display counter offered chimney cakes with different toppings and fillings.

Chimney cakes, also known as kürtőskalács, are associated with Hungarian baking traditions. Their distinctive feature is a hollow cylindrical shape—hence the name “chimney cake.”

At Chimney Mansion, the display included several variations, from coated sweet versions to savory filled options. Seeing them together helped explain how the same bread could become either a dessert or something closer to a light meal.

I ordered a chimney cake sandwich, a signature chimney cake that was described as baked to order, and a decaf Americano. The total was KRW 17,500 at the time.

When I visit bakeries alone, oversized pastries sometimes make it difficult to try more than one thing. These portions looked manageable enough for me to order two different kinds.

    My Chimney Cake Brunch

My order included two kinds of chimney cake and a decaf Americano, totaling KRW 17,500.

Once everything arrived, it looked like a small brunch spread: the hollow signature bread, a colorful sandwich and coffee with its own little pot.

This was one of those mornings when I appreciated being able to adjust my working hours. Instead of sitting at my desk, I was by a cafe window, taking my time over breakfast.

    The Chimney Cake Sandwich

The savory sandwich was my choice for a light late breakfast.

The chimney cake sandwich was easy to enjoy as a light meal. Its shape made a change from an ordinary sliced-bread sandwich, and I liked having something savory alongside the signature bread.

I had recently started orthodontic treatment, so biting into bread needed a little care. Scissors were provided, which made it easier to cut the sandwich into smaller pieces.

For my order, pairing the sandwich with the plain chimney cake worked well: I could try two versions without making the whole meal sweet.

Coffee Served in a Small Pot

Pouring the coffee a little at a time was one of my favorite details.

The coffee service was almost as memorable as the bread.

My decaf Americano arrived in a metal pot with a small cup. Rather than drinking from a large mug, I poured a little at a time and refilled the cup as I ate.

It was a simple detail, but it changed the pace of the meal. Each refill gave me another reason to pause instead of rushing through breakfast.

When I think back to Chimney Mansion, that little pot is one of the first things I remember.

Warm Signature Chimney Cake With Honey

The warm chimney cake came with honey on the side.

The signature chimney cake arrived warm, with a crisp exterior and a chewy interior. I tried it on its own first, then dipped pieces into the honey served alongside it.

Eating it both ways let me enjoy the texture of the bread before adding more sweetness.

If I were choosing just one item on a first visit, I would start with the signature chimney cake. It was the clearest way to experience the bread itself. For a more substantial snack or late breakfast, I would consider adding the sandwich again.

    Is Chimney Mansion Worth Visiting?

I enjoyed Chimney Mansion for its combination of distinctive bread, an interesting interior and a thoughtful coffee presentation.

The building drew me in, but the warm chimney cake and coffee pot are what stayed with me afterward. It was also a pleasant place to visit alone: I could look around, take photographs and eat at my own pace.

My visit does not tell me how busy it gets on weekends, and I did not stay long enough to assess it as a laptop workspace. I would recommend it based on what I actually did there—a relaxed weekday brunch.

If you are exploring Hongdae and want a bakery cafe with something beyond the usual cakes and pastries, Chimney Mansion is worth considering.
