Hi, I’m Choi, a travel writer sharing local food, art, and culture in Korea.

If you are looking for things to do in Seoul in October 2026, the Seoul Light Hangang Bitseom Festival at Nodeul Island is one of the city’s most interesting free night events.

I have lived in Seoul for nearly 20 years, but after visiting the Yeouido Fireworks Festival about ten years ago, I stopped going to large festivals because of the crowds.

After spending about two years traveling around Southeast Asia, however, I came back to Seoul feeling curious about the city again. These days, I have been visiting more exhibitions, museums, and seasonal events.

So this time, I went to the 2026 Seoul Light Hangang Bitseom Festival at Nodeul Island.

Seoul Light Hangang Bitseom Festival 2026

The Seoul Light Hangang Bitseom Festival is a free light art festival held at Nodeul Island on the Han River.

The 2026 festival features laser art, media installations, sound, and illuminated outdoor spaces.

  • Dates: October 2–11, 2026
  • Location: Nodeul Island, Seoul
  • Hours: 6:30 PM–10:30 PM
  • Admission: Free
  • Theme: Rhapsody of Light

Because the festival takes place outdoors beside the Han River, the surroundings become part of the experience. The river, bridges, skyline, trees, and sunset all work naturally with the light installations.

For international visitors, Nodeul Island is an easy place to combine with a Han River walk, picnic, and Seoul night view.

Best Time to Visit Nodeul Island for the Seoul Light Festival

I walked from Nodeul Station to Nodeul Island, which took about 15 minutes.

Even before reaching the island, I could already see how crowded it was.

My biggest tip is simple: do not wait until it is completely dark to arrive.

I got there around 5:30 PM, and I was glad I did. The sunset over the Han River was beautiful, and I had time to walk around before the festival became much busier.

Visitors were already gathering at Nodeul Island before sunset on the weekend.

Arriving early also gives you time to see the festival area in daylight, take photos, and then watch the atmosphere change as the lights come on.

Many people had already spread picnic mats across the lawn.

Food and Picnic Tips for Nodeul Island

There are food trucks inside Nodeul Island, but the lines were much longer than I expected.

By evening, some queues looked close to 100 meters long.

If you do not want to spend time waiting for food, I recommend bringing a simple snack or drink with you.

Food truck lines became very long after sunset, so bringing a snack or drink can save time.

If you plan to arrive early, bringing a picnic mat can also be a good idea.

Firmamento at Seoul Light Festival: My Favorite Installation

The highlight of the festival for me was Firmamento.

I actually came without researching the artworks in detail, so I had no expectations. But once I entered Firmamento, I stayed there for quite a while.

Firmamento by Quiet Ensemble creates a star-filled space using lights, wires, and sound.

Firmamento is a work by the Italian media art group Quiet Ensemble.

The installation uses steel wires, laser lights, and sound to create the feeling of stepping into a three-dimensional constellation.

The light changes constantly, so the space looks different every few seconds.

I watched the installation for about ten minutes, and that alone made the visit worthwhile for me.

Light Art and Illuminated Willow Trees at Nodeul Island

Another installation I liked was the illuminated willow trees.

The illuminated willow trees created one of the most atmospheric night scenes at Nodeul Island.

The lights spread through the branches and leaves, making the trees look almost unreal.

It felt less like looking at a separate installation and more like the landscape itself had become part of the artwork.

It even reminded me a little of the glowing forest scenes from Avatar.

Seoul Light Festival Crowds: What to Expect on Weekends

By around 7 PM, the festival became extremely crowded.

Some areas were so busy that it was difficult to move freely, although the staff did a good job directing visitors and managing the flow of people.

While I was resting on a bench, a middle-aged couple next to me said there were too many people and not enough to see.

I understood what they meant.

If you dislike crowds, a weekend evening may feel tiring.

Still, I enjoyed seeing the sunset, the light installations, Firmamento, and the illuminated trees in one visit.

Is the Seoul Light Hangang Bitseom Festival Worth Visiting?

Yes, especially if you enjoy night views, media art, and seasonal events in Seoul.

I would recommend arriving around 5:30 PM to 6 PM, before the main evening crowd.

That way, you can enjoy the Han River sunset first, explore Nodeul Island while it is still light, and then stay for the illuminated artworks after dark.

The festival is free, easy to combine with a picnic, and offers a different view of Seoul at night.

Quick Tips for Visiting

  • Best time to arrive: 5:30–6 PM
  • Best part for me: Firmamento
  • Admission: Free
  • Bring: Comfortable shoes, water, a snack, and a picnic mat if you plan to stay longer
  • Avoid: Arriving too late on a weekend if you dislike crowds.
