If you are looking for unique things to do in Jamsil, Seoul, Seoul Book Bogo is an interesting place to add to your itinerary.

I visited Seoul Book Bogo with my sister after lunch in Jamsil. I had wanted to see this unusual book space for a while, especially because of its distinctive curved bookshelves.

What I found was not simply a bookstore. It was also a quiet place where we could choose a book, sit down, and take a break from sightseeing.

The Famous Curved Bookshelves at Seoul Book Bogo

The curved steel bookshelves are one of the most recognizable features of Seoul Book Bogo.

The first thing that caught my attention when I walked inside was the long series of curved bookshelves.

From the outside, the building looks relatively simple, so I did not expect the interior to look like this.

The repeating arches create a tunnel-like view through the bookstore and make this one of the most distinctive book spaces I have visited in Seoul.

Seoul Book Bogo was created by the Seoul Metropolitan Government as a cultural space centered on secondhand books, reading and book-related programs. The venue originally opened in a converted warehouse.

If you enjoy unique bookstores in Seoul, the architecture alone makes it worth walking around for a while.

More Than a Bookstore: A Cultural Reading Space

Visitors can browse different book sections throughout Seoul Book Bogo.

Seoul Book Bogo began as a space centered on secondhand books, but today it also functions as a cultural venue where visitors can browse books, read, and join book-related programs.

There were different sections to browse, including comics, picture books and other Korean-language books.

During my visit, I also saw displays arranged around different authors, publishers and themes. Rather than feeling like a conventional bookstore where the goal is simply to buy something, it encouraged me to slow down and look around.

Most of the books I saw were in Korean, so travelers who do not read Korean may enjoy the architecture and atmosphere more than the actual book selection.

A Quiet Indoor Place to Take a Break in Jamsil

Colorful beanbags provide a casual place to relax and read.

One area had colorful beanbags where visitors could relax.

When I visited, every beanbag was occupied. Some people were reading, while others seemed to be taking a nap, so I was not able to use one myself.

Instead, my sister and I looked for another place to sit.

That was actually one of the things I liked most about Seoul Book Bogo. It did not feel as though I needed to keep moving from one attraction to another.

If you have been walking around Seoul all day, it is an easy place to slow down for a while.

Reading Picture Books at Seoul Book Bogo

I picked several picture books to read during my visit.

We eventually found a comfortable area where we could take off our shoes and sit.

I chose several picture books, while my sister read a Bible study book she had brought with her.

I spent about an hour reading picture books inside Seoul Book Bogo.

We stayed for about an hour.

I ended up reading four picture books, which turned out to be one of the most relaxing parts of the afternoon.

For travelers who enjoy libraries, bookstores and slower travel, Seoul Book Bogo offers a different kind of experience from Seoul’s major tourist attractions.

Taking a Coffee Break

I also ordered a decaf latte while we were there.

My latte had a slightly sweet, nutty flavor, and I enjoyed drinking it while looking through the books I had chosen.

For me, the combination of books, a place to sit and a coffee made Seoul Book Bogo somewhere I could actually spend time rather than simply photograph and leave.

Is Seoul Book Bogo Worth Visiting?

Seoul Book Bogo is not a place I would recommend instead of Seoul’s major attractions if it is your first trip and you have very limited time.

Its appeal is different.

I would recommend it to travelers who enjoy bookstores, libraries, unusual architecture or quiet local places in Seoul.

I especially liked being able to choose a few picture books and simply sit with my sister for about an hour.

The beanbag seats were full during my visit, so I would like to return on a quieter weekday and try spending even more time there.
